BALTIMORE (Feb. 12, 2014) – Senior Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) of the Rutgers gymnastics team was named Eastern Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week in an announcement by the league office. She recorded a career-best 39.350 all-around score to place first in a tri-meet at George Washington.
“Each week Alexis has gotten a little bit better than the week before,” head coach Louis Levine said. “This week she rocked all four events. There wasn’t much there on anything for the judges to take. She put up a personal-best, stepping up for the team.”
Gunzelman maintained her consistency, scoring over a 39.000 for the fourth consecutive week. In addition to placing first all-around, she earned three top-two finishes in the meet.
Starting off on balance beam, Gunzelman matched her career-high 9.850 to place first in the event. Next up on floor, the senior captain posted a 9.800, earning a second place finish. Gunzelman added to the RU’s record-breaking performance on vault, recording a 9.825. She then closed the meet on the uneven bars, pacing the team with a meet-high 9.825.
This marks the third weekly conference award of the season for the Scarlet Knights, receiving an honor in each of the three categories. Freshman April Baker (Andover, Mass.) earned the first honor as Rookie of the Week in week one, followed by junior Emma Hoffman (Union, N.J.) as Specialist of the Week in week three.
Rutgers will next travel to Philadelphia for a tri-meet at Penn with West Chester Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. RU is 8-1 on the season and sits at second in the conference with a team average of 194.425.
