PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 15, 2014) – Freshman April Baker (Andover, Mass.) of the Rutgers gymnastics team was named East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Week in an announcement by the league office. She picked up a pair of top-two finishes in her collegiate debut last Saturday in a win over New Hampshire.
“I saw a lot of confidence in April out there,” head coach Louis Levine said. “She has the skills to perform at a high level each week and I look forward to seeing her progress. This is a well-deserved honor.”
In her first collegiate competition, Baker started off with a 9.825 on vault to place tied for first. The freshman ended her day with a 9.825 on the floor exercise to earn second, previously picking up a 9.675 on balance beam. The scores helped RU pick up a 195.075 team score, the highest ever for the program in an opening meet.
It is the second-straight year a Scarlet Knight earned EAGL Rookie of the Week after the first week, as now-sophomore Jenna Williams (Bordentown, N.J.) picked up the honor last season.
No. 16 Rutgers will next travel to take on No. 21 Kent State in a quad meet Friday before facing No. 19 Ohio State head-to-head Sunday.
