PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers gymnastics (5-2) team swept past West Chester and Southern Connecticut State and in the process broke the team record in the floor exercise on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Livingston Recreation Center.
RU scored a season-high 194.250 points, finishing ahead of Southern Connecticut (188.750) and West Chester (179.375). The Scarlet Knights had the top three finishers in each event.
The Scarlet Knights were dominating on the floor, led by Caitlin Wight (Washington, PA) who had a 9.900. Lorena Johnson (Liburn, GA), Nicole Bradder (Dover, NH) and Stephanie Zick (Pittsburgh, PA) all tied for second with identical scores of 9.850. As a team, Rutgers scored 49.275 points, breaking the old mark of 49.200 set on two separate occasions, most recently on March 4, 2000.
On the vault, RU had a three-way tie for first place, with Bradder, Jayme Shelton (Griffin, GA) and Johnson scoring 9.550. Elizabeth Fittery (Denver, PA) finished in fourth place with a 9.475.
Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) and Lisa Abrams (Mt. Ephraim, NJ) both scored a 8.00 to finish in a tie for first place on the balance beam. It is the third consecutive meet – and fourth time in five meets – that Abrams has finished first on the beam. Fittery scored a 9.750 to place third.
Johnson led the way for Rutgers on the parallel bars, scoring a 9.875 to finish in first place. Zick (second, 9.850), Shterenberg (second, 9.850), Heckler (fourth, 9.825) and Fittery (fifth, 9.725) were the other top placewinners for Rutgers.
In the all-around, Johnson took top honors for the second straight week, scoring a 38.800. Fittery was second (38.775) and Bradder finished third (37.425).
Rutgers takes to the road next Saturday, Feb. 7, to face Pittsburgh and Cornell in Ithaca, NY, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
