TOWSON, MD – The Rutgers gymnastics team picked up its first victory of the 2004 season, spliting with Towson and Yale on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Towson University. The Scarlet Knights scored 192.500 points, while Towson registered 193.950 points and Yale scored 186.525 points.
Rutgers (1-2) was led by freshman Elizabeth Fittery (Denver, PA), who scored a 38.375 in the all-around to finish first. She had a 9.650 (5th place) on vault, 9.625 (10th place) on bars, 9.300 (11th place) on beam and 9.800 (2nd place) on floor.
Lisa Abrams (Mt. Ephraim, NJ) tied for first place on beam with a score of 9.825. Teammate Caitlin Wight (Washington, PA) finished in fifth place (9.775), while Nicole Bradder (Dover, NH) tied for sixth place with Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) with identical 9.750 scores.
In the floor exercise, Wight scored a 9.800 to tie for second place with Fittery and Shterenberg placed sixth with a score of 9.750.
Lorena Johnson (Liburn, GA) was RU’s top finisher on bars, scoring a 9.750 to tie for fifth place. Tracy Heckler (Laurel Springs, NJ) scored a 9.675 to finish in 10th place.
In the all-around, Rutgers had three of the top four finishers – Fittery (first, 38.375), Johnson (third, 37.925) and Bradder (fourth, 37.875).
Rutgers will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 21, when it hosts Temple in a dual meet beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Livingston Recreation Center. Next weekend, the Scarlet Knights travel to James Madison University.
