WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 16, 2012) – In its final meet before the EAGL Championships, Rutgers University gymnastics ended the regular season with a second-place finish inside Kaplan Arena at the College of William & Mary on Friday. RU totaled a 192.600 team score to defeat W&M (191.650), but fell to North Carolina State University (195.450).

Rutgers (13-11) started off on the uneven bars and followed with balance beam, floor exercise and vault. That is the same rotation the Scarlet Knights are scheduled for at the conference tournament next weekend.

“I thought we finished really strong today,” said head coach Louis Levine. “We were able to fight through some difficult scoring at times to finish off the meet nicely and put up a performance that leads us into the EAGLs with confidence. I think going through the same rotation tonight that we will use next weekend is a big plus in our preparation.”

The Scarlet Knights used three all-arounders in the meet, led by sophomore Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) at 38.025. Sophomore Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) (37.725) went all-around for the seventh time this season, while junior Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) (37.600) did it for the fourth time.

The floor exercise was the strength for RU once again, totaling 48.750. D’Elia led the way, tying for second with a 9.850, followed by a 9.825 from junior Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) and a 9.775 by classmate Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.).

Straub tied a personal-best with a 9.825 to place in a tie for third on the vault podium. Gunzelman and D’Elia had the high-score on the balance beam and the uneven bars for the Scarlet Knights, respectively, with both earning a 9.700 in the event.

The Wolfpack improved to 12-5 with the sweep, while the Tribe fell to 2-23.

The much anticipated East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships will be held on Saturday, March 24 at 2 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh.
