PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 25, 2012) – Rutgers University gymnastics earned its highest team score of the season, 192.400, and put up high marks on the balance beam and the floor exercise in front of a standing-room-only crowd on Saturday night at the Livingston Recreation Center. The Scarlet Knights placed in third, while the University of Bridgeport (193.875) finished in first and Eastern Michigan University (193.125) and the United States Air Force Academy (190.950) placed in second and fourth in the quad meet, respectively.

“We had some ups and downs tonight, but I am pleased that we improved our team score,” said head coach Louis Levine. “There were a lot of positives that came out of this meet, including a number of strong individual performances.”

Rutgers (8-9) earned the highest floor exercise score of the four teams (48.925), setting a new season-high in the process. Junior Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) and sophomore Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) each impressed on the event with personal-best marks of 9.875, tying for second place. Monica Mesalles of Bridgeport (12-5) won the event with a meet-high 9.925.

The Scarlet Knights also set a new season-best mark on the balance beam (48.325), led by a first-place finish by freshman Anastasia Halbig (Schwenksville, Pa.) with a career-high 9.875 score.

Gunzelman earned a 39.000 in the all-around to finish in second, while sophomore Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) also competed in all four events (37.875).

Air Force (3-7) scored best on the floor exercise (48.325), while Eastern Michigan (4-7) achieved a 48.350 on both the floor exercise and the uneven bars. In addition to winning the floor exercise, Mesalles won first in the vault (9.900) and the all-around (39.250) for Bridgeport.

A number of program alumni were in the crowd and were recognized during the meet.

The Scarlet Knights head back on the road next weekend, traveling to Ithaca, N.Y., to compete in a quad meet at Cornell with Eastern Michigan and Temple. Events will begin at 12 noon inside Teagle Hall Gymnasium.
