Lewisburg, Pa. - The Rutgers women's golf team carded a two-round 642 (333-309) to finish third at the Bucknell Invitational, played Sunday at the Bucknell Golf Course. Freshman Kristina Lee (Haddonfield, N.J.), competing in her first collegiate event, carded a 153 (81-72) to pace the Scarlet Knights and finish tied for fourth. Lee's second round 72 tied for the second-lowest round of the 12-team tournament.
Both rounds of the Invitational were played Sunday under sunny skies. The event was delayed on day after heavy rains fell in the Susquehanna Valley on Saturday.
RU's two top finishers were rookies, as freshman Lizzy Carl (Mendota Heights, Ill.) supplemented Lee by shooting a 162 (85-77) to finish tied for 18th in the 68-player field. Daley Owens (Taylorsville, Utah) carded a 163 (84-79) to place 22nd, while fellow sophomore Jeanne Waters (West Sayville, N.Y.) turned-in a 166 (85-81) to finish 26th. Freshman Sachiye Day (Alhambra, Calif.) shot a 173 (83-90) to round out the Scarlet scorecard.
The event, played on the par 70, 6,003-yard course, was the first of the spring season for Rutgers. The team's starting five was comprised of three true freshmen and a pair of second-year sophomores.
Penn State captured the team trophy with a 610 (313-297) total, nine strokes better than second place Youngstown State. YSU did boast the individual champion, however, as Samantha Formeck shot a 147 (73-74) to defeat Brianna Malcolmson of PSU by two strokes. Malcolmson carded a 70 in the second round, the lowest score by any player in the invitational.
The Scarlet Knights, under the leadership of 16th-year head coach Maura Ballard, return to action at the Penn State Invitational, played next weekend (Sept. 13-14) in University Park, Pa. COMPLETE RESULTS
