CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Rutgers women's golf team is in seventh place and the men's squad is in 12th position after the opening rounds of the 2008 BIG EAST Golf Championships, played Sunday, April 20. The women carded a 53-over par 341 at the Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, Ohio, while the men shot a 19-over 307 at the Traditions Golf Club in Hebron, Ky.
Junior Lauren Huhnerkoch (Burnsville, Minn.) and freshman Jeanne Waters (West Sayville, N.Y.) both turned-in strong performances on day one, shooting 80's. Senior Jen Rudy (Berlin, Conn.), junior Stephanie Yastrub (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and freshman Daley Owens (Taylorsville, Utah) comprised the rest of the Scarlet scorecard. Rudy shot an 87, while Yastrub and Owens tallied 94 and 98, respectively.
Sophomores James Arbes (Westfield, N.J.), Jordan Gibbs (Princeton, N.J.) and J.F. Sorbella (Port Chester, N.Y.) collectively paced a very young men's squad on Sunday with 76 totals. The trio is tied for 28th place heading into Monday's second round. Sophomore James Hillaire (Fishkill, N.Y.) and freshman Chris Frame (Woodstock, Ill.) completed the Rutgers effort by tallying 79's.
Notre Dame junior Lisa Maunu found her way to the top of the individual standings with a one-over 73 after day one of the Women's Championship. The Irish lead the team race with scoring rounds of 73, 74, 74 and 75 for an eight-over 296. ND was the only team to crack the 300 mark on the first day. Defending champion Louisville is in second place with a +14 302.
The Men's Championship teed off in cool and rainy conditions. Marquette senior Ted Gray leads the individual race with a four-under 68 after day one. The Golden Eagles are on top of the team race with a three-over total of 291 (68-72-72-79). Seton Hall is close behind in second place at six-over 294.
