PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers women's golf team is in 4th place with a 336 team total after round one of the Rutgers Invitational, played Friday, Oct. 12, at the Rutgers Golf Course in Piscataway, N.J. Although rain delayed the start of the tournament, the Scarlet Knights played well, with two players finishing among the top twenty.
"The conditions were very tough because of the wind and the wet golf course," said head coach Maura Ballard. "But I was very pleased with the performance of my team."
Lauren Huhnerkoch (Burnsville, Minn.) paced the team with a first round 81 (41-40), tying her for 9th place. Terry Grandis (East Patchogue, N.Y.) was not far behind, carding an 82 (46-36), good enough to put her in a tie for 12th place. Rounding it our for the Scarlet Knights, Jeanne Waters (West Sayville, N.Y.) finished with an 84 (41-43), Daley Owens (Taylorsville, Utah) tallied an 89 (49-40), and Jen Rudy (Berlin, Conn.) shot a 90 (45-45).
Two players played as individuals for the Scarlet Knights. Ellen Speace (Narvon, Pa.) carded a 95 (46-49) and Stephanie Yastrub (Lake Grove, N.Y.) finished round one with a 96 (47-49).
Bethune-Cookman College is in first place after round one with a 318 team total. Yale University and Siena College are in second and third place, with team totals of 329 and 331, respectively.
"I believe we can move into the top three tomorrow," said Ballard. "As a team, that is what we are looking to do."
The Rutgers Invitational wraps up with the final round on Saturday, Oct. 13, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. The RU golf course was designed by Hal Purdy and is located on the Busch Campus. Picturesque and tree-lined, it offers a challenging layout. Highlights include narrow fairways, fast greens, and water hazards on nine holes.
