FAIRFIELD, CT – The Rutgers University women’s golf team took second place honors (657), finishing three strokes behind first place Boston College (654), at the 11-team Sacred Heart Invitational, in Fairfield, CT, on Oct. 30-31.
Freshman Ashley Kozlowski (Fairfield, CT), playing in her hometown, and junior Ashley Fowler (Scottsdale, AZ) each fired a 164 (80, 84) over the two day tournament to finish in a tie for fourth place honors. Fowler and Kozlowski were among three Scarlet Knight golfers to finish in the top-10, the other was junior Lauren Braswell (Basking Ridge, NJ), who carded a 166 (78, 88) to finish tied for 10th overall.
Freshman Lauren Huhnerkoch (Burnsville, MN) shot a 167 (84, 83) to finish tied for 15th overall and freshman Kristin Hrycko (Toronto, Ontario), the fifth and final Rutgers golfer to wind up in the top-20, finished with a 169 (85, 84), good for 17th overall out of 57 participants.
Boston College won the tournament, while the Scarlet Knights placed second, 28 strokes ahead of third place finisher Monmouth (685). Emily Cannon of Boston College earned first place honors, followed by Rae Johnson of Monmouth and Courtney Richardson of Fairfield to round out the top three.
Rutgers head coach Maura Waters was pleased with her team’s play, especially after the first day of the tournament.
“I was very proud of the way they played,” Waters said. “It certainly was a nice way to end the fall and we are looking forward to a very successful spring season.”
With their second place finish, the Scarlet Knights close out their fall schedule on a very high note. After finishing fifth at the Dartmouth Invitational, ninth at the Princeton Invitational and 18th at the Shootout at the Legends, its performance at the Sacred Heart Fall Classic has the women’s golf team anxiously awaiting their spring slate. The team will head to Port St. Lucie, FL, for spring training from March 11-18, culminating with a match against Northwood at the end of the trip.
