LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL – Rutgers women’s golf placed 13th with a 961 (323-326-312) team total at the Central District Invitational, played Monday and Tuesday at the par 72, 6,325-yard Cypress Links Course at Lakewood Ranch. The Scarlet Knights saved their best round for last, carding 312 over the final 18 holes to finish strong in their initial event of the spring season.
Freshman Taylor Clark (Sterling Heights, Mich.) paced the Scarlet Knights, carding a 230 (78-77-75), including a final round 75, to finish 59th in the 80-player field. Sophomore Samantha Moyal (Alameda, Calif.) aided the final round charge by also shooting 75 on Tuesday. She placed tied for 65th with a 237 (80-82-75) total.
Sophomores Jackie Mullens (Brookside, N.J.) and Gabrielle Sacheli (Pittsford, N.Y.), as well as freshman Maddy Gedeon (Roseville, Calif.), comprised the rest of the Scarlet scorecard. Mullens finished 76th with a 250 (86-82-82), Sacheli placed 78th with a 253 (82-91-80) and Gedeon was 79th with a 256 (83-85-88).
No. 15-ranked Vanderbilt edged No. 18 UCF by one stroke, 844-845, to win the title in the 13-team event. The Knights led nearly the entire tournament until the Commodores rallied with less than three holes to go to take the lead. Host Michigan State took third place after shooting the lowest 54-hole score in program history with a 15-under 849.
MSU’s Allyssa Ferrell tied for first place along with Vanderbilt's Simin Feng, who also carded a nine-under 207 (67-69-71), but Feng was officially awarded medalist honors due to a scorecard playoff.
Rutgers, under the leadership of 22nd-year head coach Maura Ballard, returns to the links March 2-4 at the Kiawah Spring Invitational in Kiawah Island, S.C.
