PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 14, 2013) – Rutgers women’s golf is tied for ninth with a 326 team score after the opening round of the 20-team Rutgers Invitational, played Monday at the par 72, 6,034-yard Rutgers University Golf Course. Sophomore Jackie Mullens (Brookside, N.J.) paced the Scarlet Knights on day one, carding an 80, to enter Tuesday’s final round tied for 32nd in the 113-player field.
Mullens was even in par three scoring and shot 35 on the back nine.
Monday’s opening round was played under sunny skies with temperatures ranging from the low to high 60’s with light winds from the south.
Sophomore Gabrielle Sacheli (Pittsford, N.Y.) and freshman Taylor Clark (Sterling Heights, Mich.) joined Mullens among the top 40 competitors. Both shot 81 to enter the final 18 tied for 39th.
Freshman Maddy Gedeon (Roseville, Calif.) and sophomore Samantha Moyal (Alameda, Calif.) comprised the rest of the Scarlet scorecard. Gedeon is tied for 70th with an 84 and Moyal is tied for 78th with an 85.
RU sophomores Melanie Chambers (Henderson, Nev.) and Racquel Zurick (West Trenton, N.J.) competed as individuals. Chambers carded a 75 and is tied for fifth overall, while Zurick shot 80 and is tied for 32nd. Chambers was even in both par four and par five scoring.
Defending tournament champion Seton Hall and Delaware are tied for the lead with 302 totals. Bucknell is in the show position, seven strokes back with a 309. Individually, Seton Hall’s Erin McClure and Bucknell’s Bridget Wilcox are knotted atop the leaderboard with one-over par 73’s.
The second and final round of the Invitational tees-off Tuesday morning, with tee-times ranging from 8-10:20 a.m. Final results will be posted on ScarletKnights.com.
