CRYSTAL RIVER, FL – The Rutgers Women’s Golf Team is in 13th place with a 316 team score after the opening round of the Cincinnati Spring Invitational, played Friday at the Plantation Inn Golf Resort and Spa. Senior Karen Cash (Allendale, N.J.) paced the Scarlet Knights on day one, carding a two-over par 74 to enter Saturday’s second round ninth in the 102-player field.
Cash, who had three birdies on Friday, was joined in the top 25 by senior Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.). Weddell is tied for 21st after carding a 77.
A trio of freshmen - Melanie Chambers (Henderson, Nev.), Gabrielle Sacheli (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Samantha Moyal (Alameda, Calif.) – comprised the rest of the Rutgers scorecard. Chambers is tied for 63rd with an 82, Sacheli is tied for 71st with an 83 and Moyal is tied for 80th with an 84.
Bradley leads all teams with 302 strokes, while Florida Southern (303), host Cincinnati (304), Xavier (306) and North Dakota State, Florida Gulf Coast and Seminole State (307) round out the top five. Florida Atlantic, the only former champion (2007 and 2008) in the 2013 field, is tied for 11th with a 315.
In the individual competition, Florida Southern’s Megan Kiley shot a two-under-par 70 to pace the field. Six players carded an even par 72.
The second round tees-off at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
