REUNION, Fla. (April 24, 2012) – The Rutgers women’s golf team placed fifth with a 956 (311-324-321) total at the 2012 BIG EAST Championship, played Sunday through Tuesday at The Watson Course at Reunion Resort & Club. Freshman Kortnie Maxoutopoulis (Pleasanton, Calif.) paced the Scarlet Knights with a 229 (75-78-76) to finish tied for eighth in the 40-player field.

Maxoutopoulis had six birdies to go along with 29 pars.

Junior Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) also performed well on the challenging course, carding a 239 (77-81-81) to place tied for 21st. Plus two in par three scoring, she has a team-best 30 pars.

Seniors Lizzy Carl (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Elisa Mateer (Marmora, N.J.) and junior Karen Cash (Allendale, N.J.) rounded out the team scorecard. Carl (75-88-85), who was minus one in par five scoring, and Cash (84-81-83) tied for 36th with 248 totals. Mateer improved with each round and placed 38th with a 251 (86-84-81).

USF captured its first BIG EAST title with a 910 total to best second-place Notre Dame by a single stroke. The Bulls were led by sophomore Christina Miller, who shot a final round one over-par 73. She finished in third place individually with an eight over-par 224. Three other Bulls placed in the top 10.

Notre Dame Freshman Ashley Armstrong won the individual title after defeating Louisville freshman Emily Haas on the third playoff hole. Both players posted totals of 223 and finished the tournament seven-over par. Both players bogeyed the 18th in the first hole of the playoff. They played the hole again and both registered pars. Armstrong birdied the hole the third time around to secure the victory.

Rutgers placed ahead of St. John’s (sixth), Cincinnati (seventh) and Georgetown (eighth).

High winds hampered play once again on Tuesday. The event marked the conclusion of the 2011-12 season for the Scarlet Knights, who are under the leadership of 20th-year head coach Maura Ballard.
