Rutgers 3rd after Opening Round of BIG EAST Championship

REUNION, Fla. – The Rutgers women’s golf team is in third place with a 311 total after the opening round of the 2012 BIG EAST Championships, played Sunday at The Watson Course at Reunion Resort & Club. Senior Lizzy Carl (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and freshman Kortnie Maxoutopoulis (Pleasanton, Calif.) paced the Scarlet Knights on day one with 75s and are tied for 10th in the 40-player field.

Carl is minus one in par five scoring with 11 pars. Maxoutopoulis is minus one in par three scoring with three birdies.

Junior Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) also performed well on Sunday, shooting a 77 to sit tied for 15th. She is even in par three scoring and had 12 pars.

Junior Karen Cash (Allendale, N.J.) and senior Elisa Mateer (Marmora, N.J.) round out the team scorecard. Cash is tied for 35th with an 84 and Mateer is 40th with an 86.

Notre Dame shot a 296 to hold a two-shot advantage over USF. Irish freshman Ashley Armstrong is tied for the lead individually after shooting a one over-par score of 73. Armstrong finished the round with five bogeys, four birdies and nine pars. Senior Becca Huffer and sophomore Kristina Nhim are both one stroke off the pace and are tied for third with five other players. Both players are two over-par after firing rounds of 74.

USF finished with a score of 298 as senior Kelli Pry tied for first place with a one over-par 73. Bulls juniors Shena Yang and Amy West also finished the opening round tied for third with rounds of 74.

The second round of the 54-hole Championship action begins Monday at 8 a.m. Eastern.
