Crystal River, FL - Rutgers women’s golf placed eighth with a 933 (316-307-310) team score at the 19-team UC Spring Invitational, played Friday through Sunday at the Plantation Inn Golf Resort and Spa. Junior Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) paced the Scarlet Knights in the competitive field, carding a 221 (75-74-72) to finish fifth among 104 competitors.
Weddell improved with each round on the par 72, 6,175-yard course. She was plus one in par three scoring, plus two in par four scoring and had seven birdies with 35 pars.
Freshman Kortnie Maxoutopoulis (Pleasanton, Calif.) joined Weddell among the top 20 competitors. The rookie tied for 13th with a 228 (77-75-76). She was plus one in par three scoring, plus one in par five scoring and had 34 pars.
Seniors Lizzy Carl (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Elisa Mateer (Marmora, N.J.) and junior Karen Cash (Allendale, N.J.) rounded out the team scorecard. Carl tied for 46th with a 238 (81-79-78), Cash tied for 73rd with a 247 (84-79-84) and Mateer tied for 96th with a 268 (83-96-89).
Florida International led from start to finish, posting rounds of 290-294-294=878 to finish 24 shots ahead of second-place Stetson (299-306-297=902).
Shelby Coyle and Katie Mundy of Florida International finished first and third, respectively, posting rounds of 69-72-72=213 and 73-73-72=218. Mallory Viera from Stetson was second with rounds of 73-73-71=217.
Rutgers, under the leadership of 20th-year head coach Maura Waters-Ballard, returns to the links April 13-14 at the Columbia Roaree Invitational in Suffern, N.Y.
