PISCATAWAY, NJ – The remnants of what was Hurricane Ivan swept through the tri-state area Saturday morning, forcing the cancellation of Saturday’s final round of the Rutgers Men’s Golf Invitational. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes played on Friday, with Rutgers junior Jason Bataille (South Plainfield, NJ) winning the individual title, leading the Scarlet Knights to the team championship.
Bataille fired a six-under-par 136 after two rounds, to win by four strokes over second-place Chris Condello of Columbia. Rutgers took the tournament crown with a four-under-par 564 (288-288), beating second-place Maryland by 12 strokes.
“I was really proud of the way we played in this tournament,” said Rutgers golf head coach Maura Waters. “Every one of our players had a terrific tournament. We are capable of playing like this every week. I have always known Jason had the potential to win a tournament and now he has proven it. It is very exciting.
Bataille finished the eight-school Invitational, held at the 6,337-yard, par-71 Rutgers University Golf Course, with identical rounds of 68. He led all 44 competitors with 11 birdies in the 36-hole tournament.
Junior Erick Morales (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) tied for third place with a two-under-par 140 (70-70). Senior Brent Pittman (Montvale, NJ) tied for eighth place with a one-over-par 143. Pittman fired an even-par 71 in the opening round before shooting a 72 in the afternoon on Friday.
Sophomore Seth Hirschhorn (Willingboro, NJ) carded a three-over-par 145 (73-72) on Friday to tie for 15th place. Junior Michael Kosup (Flemington, NJ) shot rounds of 74 and 73 for a five-over-par 147, tying for 18th place
Four Scarlet Knights competed individually in the tournament. Sophomore John Browndorf (Rumson, NJ) shot a 146 (75-71) to place 17th. Freshman Garrett Carpenter (Staten Island, NY) carded a 158 (78-80) to tie for 39th. Junior Kyle McGrady (Wall, NJ) shot a 159 (83-76) to finish 42nd.
