PISCATAWAY, NJ – Paced by junior Jason Bataille’s (South Plainfield, NJ) six-under-par 136 after two rounds, the Scarlet Knights lead after day one of the Rutgers Invitational on Friday. Rutgers shot a four-under-par 564 (282-282) for the tournament’s first two rounds to lead by four strokes over second-place Maryland’s 576 (288-288).
Bataille finished the first day of the eight-school Invitational, held at the 6,337-yard, par-71 Rutgers University Golf Course, with identical rounds of 68 to hold a three-stroke edge over second-place Chris Condello of Columbia, who shot a three-under-par 139 (70-69). Bataille led all 44 competitors with 11 birdies in the first 36 holes of the two-day tournament.
Junior Erick Morales (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) sits tied for third place with a two-under-par 140 (70-70) for the tournament’s first two rounds. Senior Brent Pittman (Montvale, NJ) is tied for eighth place with a one-over-par 143. Pittman fired an even-par 71 in the opening round before shooting a 72 in the afternoon.
Sophomore Seth Hirschhorn (Willingboro, NJ) carded a three-over-par 145 (73-72) on Friday to tie for 15th place. Junior Michael Kosup (Flemington, NJ) shot rounds of 74 and 73 on day one for a five-over-par 147. He sits tied for 18th place entering the final round.
Four Scarlet Knights competed individually in the tournament. Sophomore John Browndorf (Rumson, NJ) shot a 146 (75-71) to place 17th. Freshman Garrett Carpenter (Staten Island, NY) carded a 158 (78-80) to tie for 39th. Junior Kyle McGrady (Wall, NJ) shot a 159 (83-76) to finish the day 42nd. Freshman Brian Steeves (Wappinger Falls, NY) finished the day 43rd with a 160 (77-83).
