OCALA, FL – The Rutgers University men’s golf team opened its 2004 spring season with a 13th-place finish at the Big Red Classic in Ocala, FL. The Scarlet Knights shot 931 (308-306-317) in the three-round, 15-school tournament held at the par-72 Lake Diamond Golf Course.
Methodist College won the event, carding an 887 (292-292-303) for three rounds, while Methodist’s Adam Horton took individual honors with a three-under-par score of 213 (73-72-68) for the two-day tournament.
Junior Brent Pittman (Montvale, NJ) paced the Scarlet Knights with a 226 for the tournament to tie for 23rd overall. He fired a one-over-par, 73 the first two rounds before wrapping up the tournament with an 80 on Sunday.
Senior Brian Whitman (Blairstown, NJ) and sophomore Erick Morales (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) tied for 66th place with identical scores of 238. Whitman shot a 78 in the tournament’s opening round, finishing with rounds of 80 in his final two rounds. Morales fired a 78 and an 83 in the opening day, finishing with a 77 in the final round.
Sophomore Mike Kosup (Flemington, NJ) carded a 239 (85-74-80) for the event to tie for 69th. Freshman Seth Hirschhorn (Willingboro, NJ) ended the tournament with a 244 (79-82-83) to place 81st, while junior Jason Bataille (South Plainfield, NJ) shot a 258 (85-79-94) to finish 95th.
Rutgers will be back in action next Monday and Tuesday, March 22-23, at the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, VA.
