STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Rutgers men’s golf is in second place with a 573 (289-284) total after day one of the 14-team Rutherford Intercollegiate, played Saturday on the Penn State Blue Course. Senior Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) carded a seven under 135 (69-66) on the par 71, 7,202-yard course to enter Sunday in second place in the 78-player field.
Renza is just two shots off the pace. Minnesota’s Jose Mendez is atop the leaderboard with a nine-under 133 (68-65).
Sophomore Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) also performed extremely well and is tied for third with a two-under 140 (68-72).
Sophomore Louis Bodine (Flemington, N.J.) turned in a strong effort as well through 36 holes and provided RU three competitors among the top 20. He is tied for 16th with a 145 (75-70).
Freshmen Chase Wheatley (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and Michael Howe (Temecula, Calif.) comprise the rest of the Rutgers scorecard. Wheatley is tied for 34th with a 148 (74-74) and Howe is tied for 51st with a 150 (78-72).
Minnesota leads the tournament, nine strokes ahead of the Scarlet Knights, with a 564 (286-278). Eastern Michigan and Army are tied for third with 582 totals.
