WILLIAMBURG, Va. – Rutgers men’s golf is tied for 16th with a 304 total after the opening round of the 27-team Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate, played Sunday on the River Course at Kingsmill Resort. Sophomore Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) paced the Scarlet Knights on day one, carding a two-over par 72 to enter Monday’s second round tied for 15th in the 140-player field.
Chang’s 14 pars on the opening 18 holes tied for the third-best of the day, while his -1 performance on par fours was also among the tournament leaders.
Senior Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) also performed well on Sunday and is tied for 36th with a 74. He is minus one in par five scoring and has 14 pars.
Freshmen Chase Wheatley (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and Michael Howe (Temecula, Calif.) and junior Jacob Stockl (Clark, N.J.) comprise the rest of the Rutgers scorecard. Wheatley is tied for 88th with a 78, Howe is tied for 105th with an 80 and Stockl is tied for 122nd with an 82.
William & Mary is hosting the event on the 6,765-yard course. Also competing are Appalachian State, Binghamton, Boston College, Bucknell, Dayton, Delaware, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Fairleigh Dickinson, George Mason, Georgetown, IPFW, James Madison, Longwood, Loyola (Ill.), Loyola (Md.), Miami (Ohio), Penn State, Radford, St. Joseph's, Temple, Texas Tech, Towson, UNC Greensboro and Wright State.
Eastern Michigan and Texas Tech are tied for first place with 288 totals. Carter Jenkins of UNC-Greensboro is atop the leaderboard with a two-under par 68.
