VERONA, Wisc. – Rutgers men’s golf is 10th with a 593 (298-295) total after two rounds at the 14-team Badger Invitational, played Sunday and Monday at University Ridge Golf Course. The Scarlet Knights 295 on Monday marked the fourth-best round of the day in the highly-competitive event.
Senior Doug Walters (Blairstown, N.J.) and freshman Michael Howe (Temecula, Calif.) are tied for 25th in the 74-player field with 148 totals. Both carded 71 on Monday after opening rounds of 77. Their efforts helped RU improve two positions in the standings entering Tuesday’s final round.
Players endured windy conditions with gusts up to 15 miles per hour and temperatures in the 60s on Monday.
Sophomore Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.), senior Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) and freshman Ryan Rose (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) comprise the rest of the Rutgers scorecard. Chang is tied for 37th with a 149 (74-75), Renza is tied for 40th with a 150 (72-78) and Rose is tied for 57th with a 154 (75-79).
South Carolina continues to lead the 54-hole Invitational with an 11-under par 565 (282-283) on the 7,259-yard, par 72 course.
South Carolina's Matthew NeSmith had the best round of the day on Monday with a five-under 67. Teammate Caleb Sturgeon, who had the top round Sunday with a record-tying 65, matched par to retain his lead by two strokes over NeSmith with a seven-under 137 (65-72).
Play concludes Tuesday with an 18-hole shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. CT.
