VERONA, Wisc. – Rutgers men’s golf is 12th with a 298 total after the opening round of the 14-team Badger Invitational, played Sunday at University Ridge Golf Course. Senior Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) paced the Scarlet Knights on day one, carding an even par 72 to enter Monday’s second round tied for 18th in the 74-player field.
Sophomore Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) also performed well, carding a 74 to sit tied for 38th in the highly-competitive field.
Sunday’s opening round was played under sunny skies, with calm winds and a temperature of 67 degrees.
Freshman Ryan Rose (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.), senior Doug Walters (Blairstown, N.J.) and freshman Michael Howe (Temecula, Calif.) comprise the rest of the Rutgers scorecard. Rose is tied for 45th with a 75, while Walters and Howe are tied for 58th with 77’s.
South Carolina leads the Invitational with a six-under 282. USC-Upstate is four strokes back at 286. Xavier, Missouri-Kansas City and Illinois State are tied for third with a one-under 287.
Caleb Sturgeon of South Carolina tied the 18-hole collegiate course record and the Badger Invitational record with a 65. Matt Gerard of Xavier is in second with a three-under 69. Seventeen players shot under par in the first round.
The 54-hole event resumes Monday at 9 a.m., before a final round on Tuesday.
