PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men’s golf team is in first place with a 571 (287-284) total after the opening two rounds of the 16-team Rutgers Invitational, played Friday at the par 71, 6,347-yard Rutgers University Golf Course. Individually, RU junior Jacob Stockl (Clark, N.J.) is atop the leaderboard with a four under par 138 (70-68).
Stockl, who is one stroke ahead of Ryan Snouffer of Adelphi, is a tournament-best minus five in par five scoring and minus two in par three scoring. He also has an eagle to his credit.
Senior Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) is tied for third in the 90-player field with a 141 (72-69). He is an event-best minus two in par four scoring and has a tournament-best 10 birdies.
Sophomore Jonathan Chang (Valenica, Calif.), senior Doug Walters (Blairstown, N.J.) and freshman Michael Howe (Temecula, Calif.) comprise the rest of the Scarlet scorecard. Chang is tied for 12th with a 143 (73-70), Walters is tied for 35th with a 149 (72-77) and Howe is tied for 69th with a 154 (76-78).
The Scarlet Knights have second five competing as well, which is 13th with a 603 (305-298) score and is comprised of senior Dillon Corbo (Montville, N.J.), junior Hyung Mo Kim (Norwood, N.J.) , sophomore Louis Bodine (Flemington, N.J.) and freshmen Ryan Rose (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) and Chase Wheatley (Corona del Mar, Calif.). Wheatley is tied for 32nd with a 148 (75-73).
Two-time defending tournament champion USC Upstate and Bethune-Cookman are tied for second behind the Scarlet Knights with 573 team scores.
The third and final round of the 54-hole event tees-off on Saturday morning. Results will be posted on ScarletKnights.com when available.
