HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL – The Rutgers University men’s golf team placed 18th with a 958 (313-321-324) team score at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, played Saturday and Sunday on the par 72, 7,230-yard Las Colinas golf course at the historic Mission Inn Resort. Junior Doug Walters (Blairstown, N.J.) led the Scarlet Knights, carding a 232 (78-77-77) to finish tied for 54th in the 116-player field.
Sophomore Jacob Stockl (Clark, N.J.) and junior Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) joined Walters among the top 100. Stockl tied for 73rd with a 236 (76-81-79) and Renza tied for 97th with a 242 (79-82-81)
Freshmen Louis Bodine (Flemington, N.J.) and Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) rounded out the Scarlet scorecard. Bodine was 111th with a 248 (80-81-87) and Chang placed 115th with a 270 (95-86-89).
A pair of B1G teams paced the tournament. Indiana captured first place with an 869 (292-286-291) and Purdue placed second with an 871 (288-289-294).
The 54-hole event featured 18 teams and marked the first event of the spring season for RU. George Mason was the tournament host. The field also featured Appalachian State, Florida Atlantic, Hartford, Georgia State, Marquette, Morehead State, Murray State, Northern Illinois, ODU, Stetson, Towson, Connecticut, Virginia Tech and Western Illinois.
Rutgers, under the leadership of second-year head coach Rob Shutte, returns to the links at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate, March 24-26 in Williamsburg, Va.
