PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 7, 2012) - Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) has signed a national letter of intent to compete in men’s golf for Rutgers University, it was announced today by head coach Rob Shutte. The 2012 All-Santa Clarita Boys Golfer of the Year, Chang will play as a true freshman for the Scarlet Knights in 2012-13.
“We are very excited to have Jonathan join our program this fall,” said Shutte. “He has a great deal of physical talent, but equally important are his positive attitude and coachability. It will be excited to watch him develop the next four years.”
Chang was a three-time team captain and most valuable player under head coach Robert Waters at Valencia High School, where he was a 2012 graduate. He was the Foothill League Most Valuable player as a sophomore and senior, with a 69 and 68, respectively. As a senior, Chang earned individual medalist honors in four of six Foothill League matches. In the post-season, he followed it up with a two-over 74 at TPC Valencia to finish with a 36-hole total of 148 to capture his third consecutive Newhall Land Cup title.
A nationally-ranked AJGA competitor, Chang has numerous top finishes in both regional and national junior tournaments. He played four events on the FCWT Junior Tour in 2011-12, making all four cuts and placing tied for ninth at the Classic Club 36 holes. At the AJGA ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior, he finished 17th with a 220 (74-73-73), his second top 20 finish in five AJGA events in the spring of 2012.
The Rancho Vista course record holder with a 64, Chang is an accomplished pianist who is interested in business.
