REUNION, FL – The Rutgers men’s golf team is in 11th place with a 312 total after the opening round of the BIG EAST Championship, played Sunday on the Watson Course at Reunion Resort & Club. Sophomores Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) and Doug Walters (Blairstown, N.J.) paced the Scarlet Knights on day one, carding 74s to enter Monday’s second round tied for 21st in the 60-player field.
Renza and Walters were both even in par three scoring.
Junior John Fagan (Flemington, N.J.), freshman Jacob Stockl (Clark, N.J.) and sophomore Dillon Corbo (Montville, N.J.) comprised the rest of the team scorecard. Fagan is 51st with an 80, Stockl is tied for 57th with an 84 and Corbo is 60th with an 85.
Notre Dame, looking for its second-straight title, owns a one-stroke lead over Louisville with a 284. Irish junior Paul McNamara sits in second place individually after shooting a four under-par score of 68. He recorded six birdies and two bogies during the round. Defending champion Max Scodro fired a three under-par 69 to sit alone in third place.
Louisville (285) senior Justin Dorward leads the field individually after shooting a five under-par 67. Dorward posted five birdies without recording a bogey on the day.
Villanova finished the round in third place with a score of 293.
Second round action of the 54-hole Championship begins Monday at 8 a.m. Eastern.
