PISCATAWAY, NJ - Long-time Rutgers athletics administrator Kevin MacConnell has been named Deputy Director of Athletics, it was announced today by Director of Athletics Robert E. Mulcahy III. MacConnell replaces Joe Quinlan, who left Rutgers after seven years to become Athletic Director at Seton Hall University.
MacConnell has served the Athletic Department in a variety of administrative roles for over 19 years. In his new position as Deputy Director, he will oversee the day-to-day operation of the Rutgers Athletic Department. He will work closely with the Division's Associate Athletic Directors who handle areas such as facilities, events and operations; student services and compliance; administration and finance; communications; and development and marketing. MacConnell will also continue to work closely with the football and men and women's basketball programs while continuing as the administrator for men's soccer and men's lacrosse.
"I am thrilled that Kevin has agreed to take on this role. He has been at Rutgers for nearly 20 years, and is very well respected by our coaches and athletic department staff,' said Mulcahy. 'He has a wealth of experience in intercollegiate athletics, and is familiar with the landscape of Rutgers, the BIG EAST Conference and the NCAA.'
MacConnell, a Plainfield native, graduated from Rutgers College in 1980, and returned to his alma mater in 1986 when he was named Director of Sports Media Relations. He has also served as Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Communications, and Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. Prior to coming to Rutgers in 1986, MacConnell worked for the Atlantic 10 Conference, the New Jersey Generals (USFL) and the New Jersey Nets.
MacConnell has been Tournament Manager for a number of BIG EAST Conference and NCAA events hosted by Rutgers, including the 1996 NCAA Final Four at the Meadowlands, and the 2001 and 2002 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships at Rutgers Stadium.
Active in the community, MacConnell is a member of the Board of Directors for the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce, and also co-chaired the Middlesex/Union County Heart Association Heart Walk
