PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Graduating seniors Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) of the Rutgers women's track and field team and Brianne Reed (Tinton Falls, N.J.) of women's soccer have been named nominees for the NCAA Woman the Year Award.
The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. Student-athletes are nominated only once in their career by their school.
The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics manages the nomination process and selections. This year a record-number 517 female college athletes were nominated, representing multiple ethnicities and all NCAA-sponsored sports within Divisions I, II and III, were nominated. Among those honored are 127 multi-sport athletes.
Farquharson finished her career at Rutgers as one of its most decorated track & field student-athletes. In 2016, she was a two-time Big Ten Champion, earned a total of six Big Ten Medals and four All-America honors.
During the indoor season, Farquharson captured her second-straight 200m Big Ten title, qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships and earned second team All-America status in the event. During the outdoor season, the Mid-Atlantic Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year was a first team All-America honoree in the long jump finishing seventh overall, as well as a second team All-America award winner in the 100m and 200m. She was also the Big Ten Champion in the 100m.
Reaching a personal best 6.54m (21' 5.5") in the long jump at the Seminole Invitational during the outdoor campaign, Farquharson qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in July and will vie for a spot with the U.S. Olympic Team in Rio in 2016.
Reed, winner of the 2016 Big Ten Medal of Honor and 2015 Senior CLASS Award, was a three-year Rutgers starter at center back. The Red Bank Catholic HS product started 69 matches and played in 87 overall in her career, finishing her time in Piscataway with three goals and five assists for 11 points.
Reed, a 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American, was selected as the 18th overall pick in the 2016 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Draft by FC Kansas City earlier this year. The two-time First Team All-Big Ten honoree was a member of the first class in program history to guide the team to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments, most notably in 2015 when RU made a run to its first College Cup.
