PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers’ Corey Barnes (Miami, FL) was named the BIG EAST Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and Devraun Thompson (Piscataway, NJ) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll for their performances in the Scarlet Knights’ 31-9 victory at Syracuse Oct. 15.
Barnes, a senior cornerback, came up with a big momentum-changing play when he scooped up a blocked punt and scampered 16 yards for a touchdown at the Carrier Dome, giving RU a 10-0 lead in the second quarter. It was the first of two touchdowns scored on the afternoon by Barnes – in the third quarter, he picked up a fumble by Syracuse quarterback Perry Patterson and returned it 26 yards for a score, giving the Scarlet Knights a 31-0 advantage. Barnes, a converted wide receiver who starts at cornerback and is a key member of Rutgers’ special teams, also contributed three tackles on the afternoon.
Thompson, a junior linebacker, was in on seven tackles, including five solo stops, and forced two fumbles to help Rutgers to the 31-9 win at Syracuse. His third-quarter sack and strip of Patterson led to the Scarlet Knights’ final score of the game when Barnes recovered the loose ball and returned it 26 yards for Rutgers’ final score.
This marks the third time this season that members of the Rutgers program have been honored with BIG EAST weekly awards. Junior Willie Foster (Miami, FL) was named the BIG EAST’s Special Teams Player of the Week twice (Sept. 12, Oct. 2), Ryan Neill (Wayne, NJ) was named the Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 12, and Brian Leonard (Gouverneur, NY) and Courtney Greene (New Rochelle, NY) were selected to the Oct. 2 Honor Roll.
The Scarlet Knights, 4-2 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play, will play at Connecticut (4-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) Saturday, Oct. 22, at 3:00 p.m. The game will be shown on the MSG Network and the New England Sports Network, and can be heard on WOR 710 AM, WCTC 1450 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM.
