PISCATAWAY, NJ – On the second day of preseason camp, head football coach Greg Schiano announced that Ray Pilch (Piscataway, NJ), Tres Moses (Delray Beach, FL) and Jarvis Johnson (Miami, FL) will serve as captains for the 2004 season.
"I was pleased that there were a lot of guys who received votes," said Schiano. "These three, however, were head and shoulders above the rest."
Pilch, who started at tight end for Rutgers last season, has since moved to center, his third position since joining the Scarlet Knights as a walk-on in the spring of 2001. Pilch also saw time at fullback during his Rutgers career, but has shifted to the offensive line for his final collegiate season. In 2003, he caught eight passes for 161 yards and caught 16 for 135 yards in 2002.
Moses was a standout at both wide receiver and on special teams for Rutgers last season, returning a punt 66 yards for a touchdown and hauling in an 18-yard TD pass as well in the season-opening win vs. Buffalo to begin his 2003 campaign. He finished the season with 52 catches for 536 yards and ranked 25th nationally in punt return average at 11.4.
Johnson, an All-ECAC performer at strong safety in 2004, led the Scarlet Knights in tackles with 97, which ranked fifth among defensive backs in the BIG EAST. A two-year starter, Johnson tallied 10 or more tackles in five of 12 games, amassing a season-high 11 vs. Michigan State and Pittsburgh.
