We are all excited about the upcoming 2013 New Era Pinstripe Bowl and the opportunity to play Notre Dame in Yankee Stadium. We are expecting a great game and strong representation from the Rutgers family. Our football student-athletes appreciate your on-going support as they prepare for December 28.
I wanted to take the time to provide a few reminders that relate to extra benefits and the bowl game. An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a Rutgers University employee or a Rutgers University booster to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their relatives or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution's students or their relatives or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g., foreign students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.
We recognize that many of you know, and/or have interacted with, our football student-athletes, their families, and friends either at Rutgers games or within the community. It is important that such interactions are solely exchanging pleasantries and do not involve benefits being provided to current student-athletes. Preserving the integrity of Rutgers University, Rutgers Athletics, and the eligibility of our student-athletes is our highest priority and a shared responsibility throughout the Rutgers community. We need to be mindful that acts of kindness can run afoul of NCAA regulations. Such benefits can jeopardize a student-athlete’s eligibility that would render him ineligible for competition including the 2013 New Era Pinstripe Bowl. I am confident that you will do your part in preventing such violations from occurring.
Here are some helpful reminders as they apply to the bowl game. Please keep in mind that this list is not exclusive. If you are presented with a situation not addressed below, please contact the Office of Athletics Compliance.
· Student-athletes, their families, and friends must pay for bowl tickets consistent with the general public. Student-athletes are provided a limited number of complimentary admission. Any additional ticket requests may NOT be provided or coordinated by a Rutgers University employee or Rutgers supporter (e.g. booster).
· Student-athletes families and friends may NOT receive free or reduced transportation or hotel lodging from Rutgers University or Rutgers supporters (e.g. boosters).
· Rutgers supporters may NOT use their priority points in order to secure additional tickets for the families and friends of Rutgers student-athletes.
· Rutgers University and Rutgers supporters may NOT grant access to premium seating areas at Yankee Stadium to the families and friends of Rutgers student-athletes.
We appreciate your support and cooperation. If you have questions, please contact my office at 732-445-7843 or via email at email@example.com.
We look forward to seeing you at Yankee Stadium on December 28.
