PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 23, 2013) – Rutgers junior quarterback Gary Nova (Elmwood Park, N.J.) and true freshman wide receiver Janarion Grant (Trilby, Fla.) received American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors Monday. Nova was selected as the conference’s offensive player of the week while Grant was the league’s special teams player of the week.
Nova engineered Rutgers’ second-half comeback from a 24-7 deficit to help the Scarlet Knights top Arkansas 28-24. He completed22-of-43 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes as the Scarlet Knights scored 21 unansweredpoints to close the game. Nova, who threw for 147 yards in the fourth quarter against Arkansas, has thrown eight touchdown passes in two career games against the Razorbacks.
Grant had four punt returns for 106 yards and made a key play to turn Rutgers’ game against Arkansas in the Scarlet Knights’ favor with a 58-yard punt return in the third quarter. It was the second special teams touchdown of the season for Grant, who had a 100-yard kickoff return for a score in the season-opener against Fresno State.
