  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (June 5, 2013) – Three Rutgers teams – football, women’s golf and women’s lacrosse - received public recognition from the NCAA for top academic performance for their multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores, the NCAA announced. It marked the sixth consecutive year that the Scarlet Knights’ football program was cited by the NCAA.

These awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs.

The Rutgers football program was the lone state university on the list to be ranked in the top 10 percent nationally in APR for the sixth straight year. The Scarlet Knights continue to be one of the leaders nationally in both production on the field and in the classroom. Last year, Rutgers football was ranked ninth nationally in Academic Progress Rate, after placing number two in 2011 and number one in 2010.

Rutgers is one of only 13 Football Bowl Subdivision programs to be ranked in the top 10 percent in the APR scores.

The Scarlet Knights captured the BIG EAST Championship in 2012 under BIG EAST Coach of The Year Kyle Flood and earned their seventh bowl bid in eight years en route to a 9-4 (5-2 BIG EAST) record. Twenty-eight players earned BIG EAST All-Academic honors and eight were cited on the All-BIG EAST squad, including two-time Defensive Player of the Year Khaseem Greene (Elizabeth, N.J.). In April, Rutgers had a school-record seven players selected in the NFL Draft.

"Our program strives for excellence every day,” said Flood. “I am proud that our student-athletes continue to achieve in the classroom and on the field. Jenna Beverly and our academic staff have built a support system that allows our players to be the class of college football.”

Women’s golf, under the leadership of 21st-year head coach Maura Ballard, had several top finishes in 2012-13. The Scarlet Knights placed tied for 2nd at the 15-team Bucknell Invitational, second at the 21-entry Rutgers Invitational and sixth at the 14-team Brown Bear Invitational. Individually, senior team captain Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) had seven top 15, four top 10 and three top five finishes in 10 tournaments while boasting a 76.52 scoring average.

“Our team’s APR is a direct result of the dedication of both our student-athletes and our academic support staff,” said Ballard. “Academics are a priority. It’s very important to me that our team excels both on the course and in the classroom.”

Women’s lacrosse put together its fourth-straight winning season in 2013 under 11th-year head coach Laura Brand-Sias, compiling a 9-8 record. The season was highlighted by Brand-Sias notching her 100th career win against Monmouth on March 2. The Scarlet Knights were led defensively by senior goalie Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.), who earned Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-American Third Team Honors. Offensively, junior midfielder Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team as she paced Rutgers in points (45), goals (35) and assists (10).

“I am extremely proud of our student-athletes’ academic accomplishments,” said Brand-Sias. “A huge thank you goes out to our academic support staff and all they do for our program.  It is a great honor to continue a successful representation of the core values of not only Rutgers women’s lacrosse, but Rutgers Athletics as a whole.”

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced June 11.
