  • PITTSBURGH, PA – Former Rutgers punter Mike Barr was one of 10 players signed recently the Pittsburgh Steelers. Barr will be allocated to NFL Europe for its upcoming season.

    Barr played at Rutgers from 1998-2002, and concluded his career as one of the top punters in Rutgers history. He is the Scarlet Knights’ all-time leader in yards per punt (40.2) and second all-time with 251 career punts. Barr averaged 42.0 yards per punt in 2001, when he was named Rutgers’ Most Valuable Player – Special Teams. As a senior in 2002, he averaged 40.3 yards per kick, and was the recipient of the team’s “12th Man Award.”

    In 2002 – Was fourth in the BIG EAST, averaging 40.3 yards per punt … Led Conference with 92 punts … Also led BIG EAST with 3707 punting yards … Had a long kick of 60 yards … Dropped 29 kicks inside the opponent;s’ 20-yard line … Recipient of Scarlet Knights’ “12th Man Award.”

    In 2001 -- Finished the season ranked third in the BIG EAST with a 42.0 average per punt… Led the league in punts (84) and yards (3526)… The average, yards and punt total are single-season school records… Was named Most Valuable Player – Special Teams, for his efforts in 2001 season… Booted 23 punts of 50+ yards, including a career-best 63-yarder vs. Pittsburgh (11/10)… Booted 61-yard punts vs. Virginia Tech (9/22) and West Virginia (11/3)… Also dropped 19 punts inside the 20-yard line, including three in a win over Navy (10/20)… Displayed outstanding athleticism, running 20 yards for a first down vs. Miami (9/8) and completing a 15-yard pass for another first down vs. Virginia Tech (9/22)… Also made one solo tackle.

    In 2000 - Demonstrated a real knack for putting height and touch on his punts, as evidenced by his 13 punts that were downed inside the 20-yard line …11 of his punts resulted in fair catches … Punted the ball 58 times for 2,192 yards (37.8 average) … Career-long punt was 55 yards (vs. Miami and Syracuse).

    In 1999 - Sat out the season but practiced regularly, working alongside starter Charlie Titus in practice.

    In 1998 - Saw action as a true freshman in 1998 when he was pressed into service vs. BC ... Came through under fire, punting the ball 17 times for a solid 39.5 yard average ... A mid-year enrollee in ‘98, took part in all of spring practice.

    Scholastic/Personal - Averaged 43 yards per punt for a 12-2 Brookville team in 1996 and earned second-team All-State honors by AP and Coaches Association ... Had a career long punt of 63 yards ... Also played on the offensive line and at linebacker as well as handling place kicking chores ... Had two INTs and scored two defensive TDs
