PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 29, 2012) – Rutgers junior cornerback Logan Ryan (Berlin, N.J.) was named one of 15 semifinalists for the 2012 Jim Thorpe Award, the Jim Thorpe Association announced today. The Thorpe Award is given to the top defensiveback in college football.
The Thorpe Award is namedafter history’s greatest athlete, Jim Thorpe, and is presented by the Jim Thorpe Association in Oklahoma City. Thorpe excelled at every sport in which he competed, including football at which he played on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The three Thorpe Award finalists will be named on Monday, November 19 and the winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 6 airing on ESPN. The winner of the 2012 Thorpe Award will be honored at a banquet in Oklahoma City on February 5, 2013.
Ryan is the third member of the Rutgers defense that has been named a semifinalist for a major nationalaward, joining Khaseem Greene (Chuck Bednarik Award) and Steve Beauharnais (Butkus Award).
A Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2011, Ryan is tied for second in the BIG EAST and tied for 24th nationally with three interceptions in 2012. In 32 career games, Ryan has six interceptions.
Ryan is 10th nationally with 12 passbreakups this season. He is a key reason why Rutgers is ranked seventh nationally in scoring defense (14.3 points per game), 14th in total defense (306 yards per game) and sixth in rushing defense (88.5 yards per game). Ryan’s 40 tackles this season rank third on the team.
