OVERLAND PARK, KS (October 18, 2012) – Rutgers senior defensive back Duron Harmon (Magnolia, Del.) was named one of 10 NCAA® Football Bowl Subdivision student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as finalists today for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate football. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of finalists follows this release.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Harmon is in his second year as a starter and leader in Rutgers’ defensive secondary. He was a First Team All-BIG EAST selection at free safety in 2011, recording 49 tackles and ranking second in the conference with five interceptions. Harmon was named a Preseason All-BIG EAST pick by Athlon and Phil Steele leading up to the 2012 season, while also transitioning from free safety to strong safety.

A top competitor on the field and in the classroom, Harmon has compiled a cumulative 3.412 grade point average (GPA) as a Labor Studies major. He has earned All-BIG EAST Academic Team recognition twice, with those honors coming as a sophomore in 2010 and last season as a junior. He additionally made Rutgers University’s Dean’s List for the 2011-12 academic year with a term GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Outside of football and schoolwork, Harmon has made an impact in the surrounding community, highlighted by his constant presence at New Jersey’s Special Olympics event from 2010-12. He also pitched in his time at former teammate Eric LeGrand’s charity, Walk to Believe, in both 2011 and 2012. Additionally, Harmon has given his time and efforts to the Big Chill 5k Toy Drive (2010) and Urban Impact’s Hurricane Irene Cleanup Project (2011-12).

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through December 3. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2012-13 bowl season.
