PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 10, 2012) – The BIG EAST named Rutgers senior cornerback Brandon Jones (Sicklerville, N.J.) the conference’s special teams player of the week Monday. In addition, junior linebacker Jamal Merrell (Bear, Del.) was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll for his performance in the Howard victory.
Jones became the first defensive player since Quintero Frierson in 2006 to post two touchdowns in a season with his six-yard fumble return on a blocked punt against the Bison. Sophomore wide receiver Miles Shuler (Long Branch, N.J.) came untouched off the edge to block the punt, which Jones scooped up and scored.
Jones also scored a touchdown on an interception return in last week’s victory over Tulane.
Merrell was all over the field to lead a swarming Rutgers defense in the shutout win over Howard. He finished with career-highs in tackles (14) and tackles-for-loss (3.5) in the shutout victory.
Rutgers returns to action Thursday in an ESPN primetime appearance at USF. Kickoff is set for 7:31 p.m. from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa
