Secondary/Assistant Head Coach

Chris DemarestChris Demarest, a New Jersey native who began his career in coaching as a graduate assistant at Rutgers in 1989, is in his fourth season as secondary coach of the Scarlet Knights. In addition to his current responsibilities, Demarest was elevated to Assistant Head Coach in the Spring 2007.

During his tenure overseeing the Scarlet Knights’ secondary, RU has shown steady improvement. Rutgers’ current defensive backfield boast the best safety tandem in the BIG EAST and one of the top units in the nation with All-BIG EAST selections Ron Girault and Courtney Greene. Greene, who was named a Freshman All-American at his free safety spot in 2005, enters his junior year as a Jim Thorpe Award candidate. In 2006, the Scarlet Knight secondary was part of a defense that led the BIG EAST and was nationally ranked in both pass defense (sixth) and passing efficiency defense (eighth). The defensive backfield also combined to hold opponents below 200 yards passing in nine games and under 100 yards in four contests.

Demarest came to Rutgers after serving as defensive backs coach at North Carolina State for four seasons (2000-03). In that time, he helped the Wolfpack to four consecutive bowl appearances, three wins in post-season play, and a 34-17 overall record. Demarest tutored Terrence Holt, who earned All-America honors and went on to a career in the National Football League. Demarest also coached NFL players Brian Williams, Adrian Wilson, Andre Maddox, Lamont Reid and Marcus Hudson while at North Carolina State. In 2004, Demarest mentored strong safety Jarvis Johnson, who signed a free agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens following his senior season. Following the 2006 season, both Derrick Roberson (Houston) and Joe Porter (New Orleans) signed NFL contracts.

Chris DemarestPrior to his tenure at North Carolina State, Demarest was a graduate assistant at Florida State for two seasons (1998-99). Demarest was responsible for coaching the cornerbacks and helped the Seminoles to a combined 23-2 record, including a 12-0 record in 1999 and a victory over Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl for the National Championship. The year before, the Seminoles led the nation in pass defense en route to an 11-2 record and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl. Demarest helped tutor a number of Seminoles who went on to the NFL, including Derrick Gibson, Dexter Jackson and Mario Edwards.

This is Demarest's second stint as a member of the Scarlet Knights' coaching staff. His first coaching assignment was as a graduate assistant for the Scarlet Knights in 1989, following a successful collegiate career as a player at Northeastern. In his first tenure at Rutgers, Demarest was on a staff that also included Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano as a graduate assistant coach.

A native of Keyport, N.J., Demarest was a standout defensive back at Northeastern, earning All-New England honors and All-America recognition after grabbing 11 interceptions in 1987. He was a free agent signee by the Washington Redskins in 1988, before beginning his coaching career with the Scarlet Knights in 1989 as a graduate assistant. Demarest also served on the staffs of East Carolina (1990), Northeastern (1991-92), East Stroudsburg (1993), Millersville (1994), and Lehigh (1994-97) before moving on to Florida State. Demarest, who has a daughter, Junelle, and son, Dante, resides in Piscataway.
