PISCATAWAY, NJ – Despite goals from Kamilah Lalani (West Vancouver, BC) and Bobbi Jo Adams (Port Norris, NJ), the Rutgers field hockey team (5-5, 1-1 BIG EAST) fell to BIG EAST foe Villanova, 3-2, on Friday, Sept. 26, at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.
Villanova (5-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) got on the board first with 4:00 remaining in the first half when Leah Lisausky blasted a shot from just inside the circle. Rutgers, however, responded immediately, as Lalani poked in a rebound to tie the game less then a minute later. The goal was Lalani’s second of the season. Lisausky gave Villanova a 2-1 lead with 2:30 remaining before halftime when she knocked in a pass from Rory Rogers. The Wildcats added another goal with 20:12 remaining in regulation when Sara Francis scored off a feed from Colleen Helms. Rutgers closed the gap to 3-2 when Adams rebounded a shot by Jennifer Noon (Shavertown, PA) with just under 11 minutes to play. It was Adams’ first goal of the season. The Villanova defense did not allow a shot in the final 10 minutes of regulation to preserve the victory.
“It was a hard-fought game,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “We gave up to many penalty corners, and Villanova did a good job of pressuring us with their forwards. The entire coaching staff is proud of the way be battled from start to finish.”
Senior goalkeeper Meris Burton (Wilmington, DE) made eight saves, while Villanova goalkeeper Erin Scott stopped five shots. The Wildcats outshot Rutgers 15-8 and held a 16-7 advantage in penalty corners.
