PHILADELPHIA, PA – Mary Szymonowicz (Piscataway, NJ) scored her first goal of the season to help Rutgers (5-4) defeat Drexel (2-5), 1-0, on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Saint Joseph’s University.
Szymonowicz netted the lone goal of the game with 7:42 remaining in regulation on a pass from Colleen Maniere (Princeton Junction, NJ). From there, the Rutgers defense put the clamps on Drexel and successfully snuffed out the Dragons’ best scoring opportunity of a penalty corner late in the second half.
Meris Burton (Wilmington, DE) posted her second consecutive shutout, making four saves. Burton has not allowed a goal over the last 140:00 of game action and lowered her goals-against average to 1.98.
“We learned coming off of our win against Syracuse that we had to fight hard to avoid a letdown,” said Rutgers head coach Liz Tchou. “It was difficult to turn around and feel prepared for today’s game after such a big win on Saturday, but the kids hung in there and got the job done. We’re learning how to prepare for different teams and what we need to do to change our game accordingly.”
Rutgers returns to action on Friday, Sept. 26 at 8:00 p.m. when it hosts Villanova in a key BIG EAST contest at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.
