Georgetown opened the scoring at the 17:42 mark when Lauren Galbally scored on a pass from Meghan Leahey. The Hoyas upped the lead to two when Dionna Jordan scored after Leeanne Rizzo dished the ball to her. The Hoyas carried the 2-0 lead into halftime as the Scarlet Knight defense held them without another offensive chance in the final 15 minutes of the half.
Rutgers came back from the half, ready to take the offensive as junior Kamilah Lalani (West Vancouver, BC) converted a penalty corner shot, taking the ball to the outside and firing it past Hoya goalkeeper Jessica Herring. The Scarlet Knights tied the score when junior Jennifer Noon (Shavertown, PA) scored off a pass from Leann Grondski (Mercerville, NJ). Both teams saw various scoring opportunities, but Georgetown capitalized with 12 minutes remaining when Rizzo scored after her first shot deflected off of RU goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle’s (Lancaster, PA) pads.
Despite the 3-2 loss, Rutgers outshot the Hoyas, 11-7, including 7-4 in the second half. Gaenzle made three saves on the day, while Herring made six saves.
The Scarlet Knights return to the road to face in-state rival Monmouth for the first time. The Knights and the Hawks push-off at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, in Long Branch.
