PISCATAWAY, NJ – Ashley Recker (Dillsburg, PA) scored after a scramble in front of the goal with 9:59 remaining in overtime to lift Rutgers to a 2-1 victory over Columbia at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.
The Scarlet Knights (2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Jennifer Noon (Shavertown, PA) scored off a penalty corner with 23:23 remaining before halftime. Megan Cech (Moorestown, NJ) and Colleen Maniere (Princeton Junction, NJ) were credited with assists on the play. The goal was Noon’s team-leading second of the season.
Columbia scored the equalizer with 4:25 remaining in the first half when Diana Day took a pass from Erin Wesseldine and scored on a penalty corner.
After a scoreless second half, Recker scored the first game-winning goal of her career when she poked the ball past Columbia goalkeeper Kristina George. The Lions had successfully defended a penalty corner on the play, but the ball got away from George and Recker scored to give RU the 2-1 victory.
“We had great energy today,” said Rutgers first-year head coach Liz Tchou. “I was very happy with our defensive effort. It was something we work on all week in practice, and it’s nice to see the progress we’ve made. I’m happy with the win, but I’m even happier with the progression we’re showing.”
Rutgers goalkeeper Meris Burton (Wilmington, DE) made seven saves, while Columbia’s George stopped 12 shots. Rutgers outshot Columbia 13-9 and held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The Scarlet Knights return to action tomorrow when they host Dartmouth at 2:00 p.m. at the Rutgers Stadium Complex. On Tuesday, Sept. 9, Rutgers hosts Fairfield at 8:00 p.m.
