NEWARK, DE – The Rutgers field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to host Delaware in the final game of the Blue Hen Classic on Sunday, Aug. 31. Rutgers finished 1-1 at the two-day event, edging West Chester in the first game, 3-2.
Delaware got on the scoreboard 2:27 into the first half, as senior Eric LaBar scored an unassited goal. The Blue Hens stuck again 11 minutes later, as Stephanie Swain scored on a pass from LaBar. Delaware scored again with 32:27 remaining in the second half as Leah Geib made the score 3-0. The Blue Hens added two insurance goals later in the second half. LaBar finished the afternoon with two goals and two assists.
The stingy Blue Hen defense allowed just one shot by Rutgers, which came from senior Jennifer Noon (Shavertown, PA), who scored the game-winning goal against West Chester on Saturday, Aug. 30.
Senior Meris Burton (Wilmington, DE) made eight saves in goal for the Scarlet Knights, who were outshot 19-1.
"We came out a little tenative, and Delaware capitalized on that by scoring early," said head coach Liz Tchou. "Delaware is a good, physical team and we learned a lot from playing them. Overall, it was a good weekend for us. We're getting better everyday and I'm excited about our progress."
Rutgers returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 6, when it hosts Columbia at the Rutgers Stadium Complex. On Sunday, Sept. 7, the Scarlet Knights welcome Dartmouth to town.
