Rutgers held the Orangewomen without a goal until the middle of the first half when Lindsay Peirson scored off of Kristin Aronowicz’s deflected penalty corner shot. Syracuse carried the 1-0 lead into the half, while RU goalkeeper, Stacey Gaenzle (Lancaster, PA), continued her top defensive play, saving seven of SU’s nine shots in the first half. Also picking up her first defensive save was junior Leann Grondski (Mercerville, NJ), the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week.
Gaenzle and the Scarlet Knight defense held the Orangewomen without a goal for most of the second half. With three minutes remaining, Brittany Carriero scored off a ball from Michelle Marks for the final goal of the game, giving Syracuse a 2-0 victory. Gaenzle, who is ranked fourth in the nation for saves, finished the afternoon with 12 saves, while sophomore Tiffany Klebez (Milford, PA) picked up her second defense save in as many matches. Syracuse’s Audrey Latsko, the BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Week, made five saves while in the cage.
Rutgers remains at home, hosting Drexel on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. RU returns to conference play on Saturday, Sept 28, when the team heads to Villanova for a 1 p.m. match.
