  • SYRACUSE, NY – The Rutgers field hockey team (2-3) topped the Hoosiers of Indiana University (1-4) in overtime, 2-1, this evening on the opening day of the BIG EAST/ Big Ten Challenge at Coyne Field in Syracuse, NY. Junior Leann Grondski (Mercerville, NJ) gave RU its second consecutive win with her second game-winning goal of the season.

Indiana scored its only goal of the night 19:05 into the first half when Jamie Baldwin scored, unassisted. The Scarlet Knights would not let Indiana take the lead into the half as junior back Julie Speckels (Los Altos, CA) scored her first career goal, unassisted, at 30:45. Rutgers goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle (Lancaster, PA) made six saves through the two regulation periods to force the Scarlet Knights into their third overtime match of the season.

Indiana started the overtime period one man down due to a yellow card by Baldwin at 67:02 prior to the end of regulation. It didn’t take long for Rutgers to capitalize on the situation as Grondski scored the game-winning goal for the Scarlet Knights, 1:36 into overtime, with a penalty stroke. Grondski, a 2002 Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, scored her second consecutive game-winning goal for Rutgers, after scoring the winning penalty stroke against Fairfield on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Gaenzle finished the night with six saves after facing 12 shots by the Hoosiers. Indiana goalkeeper Molly Pulkrabek made four saves while facing 10 shots by the Scarlet Knights.

The Scarlet Knights will wrap up their play in the BIG EAST/ Big Ten Challenge on Sunday, Sept. 15, when they face No. 8 Michigan State (4-1) at noon.
