  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Kati Lary and Jessica Lane each scored goals to lead the Providence Friars past the Rutgers University field hockey team, 2-1, on Friday evening at the RU Stadium Complex.

Providence opened the scoring in the 29th minute of the first half off of a broken penalty corner play. Jessica Lane came up with the ball right of the circle and fired a shot that beat Rutgers goalie sophomore Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA) wide to the left, giving the Friars the 1-0 lead. After back and forth play with no team taking advantage, the Friars went into the half with the one-goal lead.

Kati Lary gave the Friars a two-goal advantage in the 39th minute of play when she tapped a rebound past Wentko. After a shuffle in front of the cage, Lary was able to knock home the eventual game-winner.

With the Friars up 2-0, the Scarlet Knights fought back, and in the 50th minute, senior back Kara Spector (Easton, MD) put Rutgers back to within one goal. Sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Mattina (Bethlehem, PA) pushed a penalty corner to sophomore midfielder Corrine Bach (Moorestown, NJ), who stopped and shuffled off to Spector, allowing her to rifle a shot past Providence goalie Stephanie Scavelli to bring RU within one goal. Unfortunately for the Scarlet Knights, that is as close as they would get.

The Scarlet Knights were awarded two penalty corners in the final minute, and despite shot attempts by Spector and Mattina, Scavelli was up to the task, turning away both shots and preserving the Friar victory.

“It is just so difficult to come back on a BIG EAST team when you are down two goals,” Rutgers head coach Liz Tchou said. “We had a lot of second half opportunities, but we were just a little late.”

“We came out strong in the second half, and we were really pumped up before the game,” sophomore forward Marielle Zibman (Princeton Junction, NJ) said. “We had the chance to put another one in, but it just didn’t happen tonight.”

Spector’s goal in the second half gave her the team lead with five goals, and her five shots on goal were a single-game high for the Scarlet Knights this season. Spector has also scored a goal in three straight matches for the Scarlet Knights.

With the loss, the Scarlet Knights fall to 6-7 on the season and remain winless, 0-3, in BIG EAST Conference play. The win improves the Friars to 5-9 on the year and gives them their first win in BIG EAST action, 1-1.

The Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 9, when they play host American University at 1:00 p.m. at the RU Stadium Complex.
