  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Megan Foster scored two goals to lead the No. 17 Villanova Wildcats to a 5-2 victory over the Rutgers University field hockey team on Friday evening.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 14th minute of the first half when Sara Schmidt scored an unassisted goal to give Villanova the early advantage. Villanova went on to score three more goals, two by Foster and one by Stephanie Campbell, to make the Wildcat advantage 4-0 at the 42nd minute of the second half.

Rutgers continued to pressure Villanova, and in the 53rd minute, sophomore forward Catherine Badolato (Berlin, NJ) scored her third goal of the year off of a pass from freshman midfielder Amy Lewis (Hainesport, NJ).

After another goal by Villanova made it 5-1, the Scarlet Knights, behind sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Mattina (Bethlehem, PA), rallied and put another goal past Wildcat goalie Alex Whalen. Mattina directed a pass off of a corner to Badolato, who was denied by Whalen; however, Mattina was along the right side of the net to knock home the rebound. The goal was Mattina’s second of the year and gave her a tie for the team lead in points with nine (2 g, 5 a).

RU head coach Liz Tchou was encouraged by her team’s effort and overall play. “Tonight was the best hockey we have played all year,” said Tchou. “We had great one-on-one tackles and great team defense.”

Villanova out-shot the Scarlet Knights, 19-11, and both teams tallied seven penalty corners each. The Scarlet Knights, despite the score, put forth a tremendous effort against a very good team in Villanova.

With the loss, the Scarlet Knights dropped to 5-4 on the season, including 0-2 in the BIG EAST. The No. 17 Wildcats improved to 8-1 on the season, and 2-0 in the BIG EAST. The Wildcats have now won five straight games.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Sunday, Sept. 25, when they head to Philadelphia, PA, to square off against the Hawks of Saint Joseph’s at 1 p.m.
