  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Playing its second game in a 24-hour span, the Rutgers field hockey team (2-0) continued its early-season offensive prowess with a 3-1 victory over visiting Drexel (0-1) on Sunday afternoon. After scoring 23 goals in 19 games last year, RU netted six in the opening weekend of the 2005 campaign.

Freshman Amy Lewis (Hainesport, NJ) opened the scoring 3:10 into the contest, dribbling into the circle and beating Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew for her first collegiate goal. Lewis, who scored 109 goals in her four-year career at Moorestown High School, finished the weekend with three points (one goal, one assist).

Rutgers’ lead was short lived, as Drexel answered right back. Emily Horvat gathered a rebound off the pads of Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA) and left the ball for Rachel Babcock, who knotted the game at 1-1.

The score remained deadlocked well into the second half until senior Bobbi Jo Adams (Port Norris, NJ) and Corinne Bach (Moorestown, NJ) made the most of a broken play off a corner attempt. With 10:45 left to play, Bach passed to Adams in the circle, who ripped the ball past McAndrew and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Less than five minutes later, sophomore Marielle Zibman (Princeton Junction, NJ) scored an all-important insurance goal when she gathered the ball on a breakaway and connected on her first goal of the season. From there, Wentko and the RU defense made the lead stand up, limiting Drexel to just three second-half shots.

“Today was a great team effort,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “Playing games on back-to-back days is never easy, but the girls kept pushing and did whatever it took to get the win. Our midfielders (Jocelyn Mattina, Amy Lewis and Corinne Bach) played outstanding and really controlled the tempo of the game.”

The Scarlet Knights outshot Drexel 14-13 (11-3 in the second half) and held a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners. Wentko and McAndrews each made six saves.

Rutgers will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 2, when it hosts Penn at the RU Stadium Complex at 7:30 p.m.
