  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Freshman Corinne Bach (Moorestown, NJ) scored two goals, including the game-winner with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation, as the Rutgers field hockey team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 3-2 victory over Saint Joseph’s on Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.

RU’s win marks the first time since the 2000 season that the Scarlet Knights have started the season with two consecutive victories.

Bach started the scoring early in the contest, as she took a pass from freshman Jocelyn Mattina (Bethlehem, PA) and beat SJU goalie Jill Stracko to stake the Scarlet Knights to an early 1-0 lead just 4:56 into the contest. Rutgers built on its one-goal lead later in the half, as Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Mary Szymonowicz (Piscataway, NJ) scored her first goal of the season off a pass from freshman Catherine Badolato (Berlin, NJ).

“It was great to get those first two goals in the first half,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “We played a lot of different people today, but there was no letdown from anyone. I think we learned a lot about ourselves as individuals and as a team.”

SJU’s Nicole Antonini, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, single-handily brought the Hawks back, scoring a pair of goals off rebounded shots. Her goals game nearly eight minutes apart, and knotted the score a 2-2 with 18:47 to play.

Bach gave Rutgers the lead back when she took a feed from Heather Graver (Vincentown, NJ) and scored her second goal of the contest. From there, RU goalie Kristin Van Rooij (Den Bosh, The Netherlands) put the clamps on the Hawks’ attack, making 13 saves, including eight in the second half. Saint Joseph’s outshot Rutgers 22-13 and held a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.

"We had a positive attitude and did a great job on both ends of the field," said senior Tiffany Klebez (Milford, PA). "After Saint Joseph's came back, and wanted to finish what he started, and everyone stepped up under the pressure."

Rutgers returns to action on Friday, Sept. 3, as it travels to Richmond, VA, to face Virginia Commonwealth. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
